The Cruise

This is me, catching up.

So…at the party, I had set up a little game for my husband to find the tickets to the cruise (which was his gift from me). I composed a series of little riddles that were designed to lead him from one person to the next (using his siblings and mine, plus a few others, as the clue bearers). Each clue bearer would provide him with a gift and another clue. The last clue led him to his chair, where he had to sit and open the gifts and then solve a puzzle using the first letter of each item. Eventually, he spelled “UNDER YOU” and then quickly realized there was something under the seat cushions. He pulled out the travel vouchers and sat staring at them for a second, fairly puzzled. And then realization set it. He said “These are cruise tickets. We’re going on a cruise….where are we going? When are we going? And do I have to book vacation?”

I had prearranged his vacation and so the next Saturday we were off to Vancouver to board our ship, Serenade of the Seas, and set sail for our 7 day cruise to Alaska. It was really quite lovely, all in all. The ship was well laid out and not lacking for any amenities. The cabins were…well, cabin sized. Oddly enough, the bed, which was two twins pushed together, was curved at the outer edge of each foot. This is valuable sleeping real estate when you’re 6 feet tall (me) and taller (my husband). But still, it was comfortable and cozy.

Overall, I’d rate the food at around 8. Food produced on such a massive scale as it must be for a cruise line is always going to suffer something in quality. Or at least that’s what my snobby palette tells me. On the other hand, I’m not a big buffet lover but I have to give full props to the variety, quality and quantity available at any given time.

We put to port in Skagway, Sitka and Juno - all of which are quite lovely little places, Sitka being the pretties of the bunch, in my opinion.

It really was a lovely, relaxing trip and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who live close to Vancouver - no airfare = reasonable cost! Here’s the birthday boy, already unwinding and we hadn’t left dock yet!
